Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most destructive diseases affecting citrus plants. The spread of this disease is closely associated with the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, as its primary vector. Current ACP control methods, including insecticides and sticky traps, still have several limitations, such as the risk of insecticide resistance, the capture of non-target insects, and trap designs that do not fully consider field-use requirements. This study aims to design and develop an ACP trap based on needs statement and the visual characteristics of ACP.
This study applied a product design and development framework. The research stages included user needs identification, technical specification determination using Quality Function Deployment and House of Quality, alternative concept development, concept selection using concept scoring, and prototype development, verification and validation .
The results of this study produced one selected trap concept, which was then developed into a prototype. The prototype fulfilled most of the established technical specifications, particularly in the visual, structural, geometric, manufacturing, and operational aspects. However, the capture performance has not yet been fully validated. Therefore, further testing is required to evaluate the biological effectiveness of the trap in a more representative manner.
