The increase in carbon dioxide (CO?) emissions from the energy sector has encouraged the development of Carbon Capture Utilization (CCU) technology as a decarbonization strategy that has the potential to generate economic added value. However, the application of CCU in chemical utilization pathways, particularly methanol production, still faces economic challenges due to high investment and operational costs. This study aims to analyze the economic feasibility of a methanol CCU project that integrates CO? emissions from the Indramayu PLTU with the Indonesian Economic Carbon Value mechanism, identify key economic sensitivity variables on project profitability, and determine the decision reversal point of the project. The study was conducted with an integrative approach starting from basic economic evaluation based on costs and Discounted Cash Flow to multi-directional sensitivity analysis. The results show that the project's baseline conditions produce an LCOP of 2293 USD/ton of methanol or approximately 6.9 times higher than the market price of conventional methanol. The DCF analysis indicates that the project is not economically feasible with an NPV of -22.92 billion USD, while the IRR and DPP cannot be calculated due to the net cash flow remaining negative throughout the project's lifetime. A one-way sensitivity analysis indicates that the methanol selling price is the most influential variable on project profitability, with the project only approaching NPV = 0 when the selling price increases to approximately seven times the base price or around 2355 USD/ton. Conversely, neither an increase in carbon prices nor a decrease in hydrogen prices individually are capable of changing the project's status to feasibility. A further multi-way sensitivity analysis indicates that project profitability is influenced by the methanol selling price, followed by the cost of green hydrogen, with carbon prices showing the lowest sensitivity. Even with the lowest realistic hydrogen cost of 1.07 USD/kg, the project still requires a minimum methanol selling price of approximately 1092.3–1287.65 USD/ton to achieve a positive NPV, indicating that reducing hydrogen costs shifts the feasibility boundary but cannot compensate for the relatively high methanol price. These findings suggest that commercialization of CCU-based methanol in Indonesia requires integrated policies and business strategies that simultaneously promote the low-carbon methanol market.
