This study aims to identify and analyze the philosophical problems underlying the commodification of land by the modern market and to explain how such commodification is systematically constituted through the thought of Karl Polanyi. This research departs from the observation that previous studies have generally examined land commodification from sociological, economic, and legal perspectives, while the philosophical foundations of this practice have received far less attention. Accordingly, this study is situated within the tradition of economic philosophy to reveal the philosophical problems underlying land commodification and to explain how these problems are reproduced within modern market society.

This research is a philosophical inquiry employing an economic philosophy approach grounded in the thought of Karl Polanyi. The method consists of philosophical reflection through the stages of interpretation, induction-deduction, internal coherence, and comparison. The primary sources include the works of Karl Polanyi, Todd S. Mei, Brian Burkhart Burow et al., and Mohammad Moechthar et al., complemented by secondary sources consisting of relevant books, journal articles, and other scholarly publications.

This study produces two main findings. First, land commodification contains categorical philosophical problems in three dimensions. Ontologically, land is treated as a commodity even though it is not produced through human labor but rather constitutes the condition that makes all productive activities possible. Epistemologically, the price mechanism is inadequate to capture the full value of land because it represents only exchangeable values, while its relational, historical, ecological, and existential dimensions remain beyond its explanatory capacity. Normatively, treating land as a commodity transforms the human relationship with land into a relation of exchange, causing responses to agrarian conflicts to remain confined within the logic of commodification without questioning its underlying assumptions, as reflected in the Rempang case. Second, based on Karl Polanyi's thought, land commodification is understood not as a natural process but as the result of the institutional construction of modern market society through the institutionalization of the self-regulating market, the process of disembeddedness, the construction of land as a fictitious commodity, and the emergence of the double movement as a social response to market expansion. This study concludes that the problem of land commodification cannot be resolved merely through agrarian policy reforms or redistributive mechanisms, but requires a fundamental transformation in the way land is understood as a commodity from the outset.
