The coaxial closed-loop geothermal system is a geothermal energy extraction technology that operates without direct contact between the working fluid and the reservoir. One of its configurations is the Downhole Coaxial Heat Exchanger (DCHE), which utilizes a coaxial tube arrangement to circulate the working fluid and extract heat from the rock formation within the wellbore. The performance of this system is influenced by various design parameters, including the material used for the outer tube. Therefore, this study aims to numerically analyze the effect of variations in outer tube material on heat distribution and thermal power output.

This study was conducted through numerical simulation using COMSOL Multiphysics on the HCE-32 well model at the Geo Dipa Dieng Geothermal Power Plant, Central Java, Indonesia. The outer tube materials considered were carbon steel, tungsten–copper alloy (70 wt% W – 30 wt% Cu),and copper. The simulation was performed under steady-state conditions with laminar flow to examine the effect of each material on the outlet temperature of the working fluid and the thermal power generated by the system.

The results showed that differences in the thermal conductivity of the outer tube materials did not have a significant effect on the working fluid outlet temperature. At a mass flow rate of 0.03 kg/s, copper produced an outlet temperature of 287.39 °C, followed by tungsten–copper alloy (70 wt% W – 30 wt% Cu) at 287.37 °C and carbon steel at 287.34 °C. In addition, differences in thermal conductivity did not significantly affect the thermal power output, with copper producing 37.547 kWth, followed by tungsten–copper alloy (70 wt% W – 30 wt%
Cu) at 37.543 kWth and carbon steel at 37.534 kWth.
