Waste heat recovery through thermodynamic power cycles represents one of the most effective energy efficiency strategies in the industrial sector, given that approximately 20–50% of energy consumed by the industrial sector is dissipated as waste heat. At low-to-medium temperature ranges, conventional steam Rankine cycles become less effective, making the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and Kalina Cycle System (KCS) more suitable alternatives. This study aims to analyze and compare the thermodynamic performance of four power cycle configurations, Recuperative ORC, Regenerative ORC, KCS-11, and KCS-34 for waste heat utilization over a heat source temperature range of 70–200°C, in order to determine the most optimal cycle configuration for each temperature range.

Modeling was conducted using Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software under steady-state assumptions with an evaporator pinch point of 10 K. For ORC cycles, the evaporation pressure was set equal to the working fluid saturation pressure at the turbine inlet temperature, with four working fluids evaluated: R245fa, R600, R600a, and R1224yd(Z). For Kalina cycles, parametric analysis was performed by varying the evaporation pressure (1–7 MPa), evaporation temperature (60–190°C), and basic ammonia mass concentration (0.60, 0.75, 0.90). The model was validated against reference literature data prior to further parametric analysis. The evaluated performance parameters were thermal efficiency and net power output.

Results show that the thermal efficiency of Recuperative ORC and Regenerative ORC each exhibit a dome-shaped profile with respect to evaporation temperature, peaking at 16.68% (145°C) and 19.7% (155°C), respectively. Across the heat source temperature range of 70–155°C, both ORC cycles consistently outperform both Kalina cycles, with Regenerative ORC achieving the highest net power output of 491.1 kW and thermal efficiency of 19.7% at 155°C. For Kalina cycles, an ammonia mass concentration of 0.90 yields peak performance over the evaporation temperature range of 60–150°C, but becomes thermodynamically infeasible at 180–190°C, where a concentration of 0.60 emerges as the optimal choice. KCS-34 consistently outperforms KCS-11 under all conditions, achieving a thermal efficiency of 20.06% and net power output of 663.8 kW at a heat source temperature of 200°C. Above 155°C, where both ORC configurations cannot operate due to the critical temperature limitations of their working fluids, KCS-34 becomes the sole viable option. Based on these results, Regenerative ORC with R1224yd(Z) is recommended for the heat source temperature range of 70–155°C, while KCS-34 with an ammonia mass concentration of 0.60 is recommended for the range of 155–200°C.
