Reduced-density concrete brick is a construction material developed to reduce the dead load of structures, one approach being the substitution of aggregate with vermiculite, which is lightweight and porous. However, the decrease in density resulting from vermiculite substitution tends to reduce flexural strength, so an additive in the form of fiberglass is required to improve its mechanical properties. This study aims to determine the effect of vermiculite substitution and fiberglass addition on the density, flexural strength (modulus of rupture, MOR), and energy absorption of reduced-density concrete brick.
The study was conducted experimentally using five mix variations, namely F0V0, F8V0, F8V10, F8V20, and F8V30, with a fixed fiberglass content of 8% and varying vermiculite content. The specimens were beams measuring 500 × 100 × 100 mm, totaling 45 units, produced using the pressing method and tested at ages of 3, 7, and 28 days. Flexural strength testing referred to SNI 4431:2011, while energy absorption was calculated from the area under the load–deflection curve using the trapezoidal integration method.
The results show that density decreased as vermiculite content increased, with the lowest value in the F8V30 variation at 1,946 kg/m³ at 28 days, representing a decrease of approximately 12.55% compared to the F0V0 variation. The optimum flexural strength was obtained in the F8V20 variation at 3.34 MPa at 28 days, indicating that a vermiculite content of approximately 20% constitutes the optimum composition. Correlation analysis showed that the relationship between density and flexural strength was very strong at early ages but weakened at 28 days, indicating that flexural strength at mature age is determined not only by density but also by age (age-dependent). The optimum energy absorption was likewise obtained in the F8V20 variation with high result consistency, reinforcing the conclusion that a vermiculite content of approximately 20% yields the best performance in terms of both flexural strength and energy absorption capacity.
