Porous ceramics have significant potential as thermal insulation materials for high-temperature applications due to their low thermal conductivity. One of the methods used to produce porous structures is the pore forming agent (PFA) method. In this study, teak wood powder was utilized as a pore forming agent to fabricate porous zirconia ceramics. This research aimed to analyze the effect of teak wood powder mass fraction variation on the physical properties, mechanical properties, microstructure, and thermal conductivity of porous zirconia ceramics.

The mass fraction variations of teak wood powder used in this study were 0%, 1%, 3%, and 6%. Teak wood powder with particle sizes of 140–200 mesh was mixed with zirconia powder using a turbula mixer for 2 hours with distilled water as the mixing medium. The mixture was then added with 5 wt.% molasses as a binder and compacted using the uniaxial pressing method at a pressure of 50 MPa for 5 minutes. The preheating process was carried out at 600°C with a heating rate of 2°C/min and a holding time of 1 hour. The specimens were then sintered at 1450°C with a heating rate of 10°C/min and a holding time of 2 hours. Characterizations and testing included mass shrinkage, volume shrinkage, density, porosity, SEM-EDX, thermal conductivity, bending strength, and Vickers hardness tests.

The results showed that increasing the mass fraction of teak wood powder increased the porosity and decreased the density of the zirconia ceramics. Test results from specimens with teak wood powder mass fractions ranging from 0% to 6% showed that the porosity increased from 2.59% to 16.22%, while the thermal conductivity decreased from 2.540 kcal/m·h·°C to 0.271 kcal/m·h·°C. The increase in porosity also reduced the mechanical properties of the material, where an increase in porosity from 2.59% to 16.22% was accompanied by a decrease in bending strength from 605.7 MPa to 304.4 MPa and a decrease in Vickers hardness from 1012.4 HV to 699.4 HV.  SEM observations showed an increase in the number of pores with increasing teak wood powder mass fraction, while EDX results indicated the presence of alumina suspension residues in several pore areas due to the polishing process. Based on these results, the use of teak wood powder as a pore forming agent was proven to successfully form porous structures in zirconia ceramics and improve their thermal insulation performance.
