This study investigated the effect of the impregnation sequence of nickel and molybdenum on green mesoporous alumina (MA), synthesized from aluminum foil waste and soapnut (Sapindus rarak) seed extract, on the physicochemical characteristics of the catalysts and their performance in the microwave-assisted conversion of Calophyllum inophyllum oil into bio-jet fuel. Four catalysts were prepared as treatment variations, consisting of MA without active metals, Ni–Mo/MA, Mo–Ni/MA, and NiMo/MA, which differed in the sequence of nickel and molybdenum impregnation. The catalysts were characterized using FTIR, XRD, SAA, FESEM–EDX Mapping, TEM–SAED, and NH?–TPD to evaluate their structural, textural, morphological, and acidity properties. Hydrotreatment was conducted in a microwave-assisted reactor at 350 °C, atmospheric pressure (1 atm), microwave power of 800 W, reaction time of 30 min, catalyst-to-feed ratio of 1:100 (w/w), and H2 flow rate of 20 mL min?¹. In addition, the stability of the best-performing catalyst was evaluated through four consecutive reuse cycles.
The results demonstrated that the metal impregnation sequence significantly affected both the physicochemical properties and catalytic performance of the catalysts. The Ni–Mo/MA catalyst exhibited the best performance, achieving a total conversion of 95.00%, total liquid product of 82.00%, and bio-jet fuel yield of 61.68%. This superior performance was attributed to its highest specific surface area (57.12 m² g?¹) and highest total acidity (2.40 mmol g?¹) among all catalyst variations. In contrast, the NiMo/MA catalyst showed the poorest performance, producing a total liquid product of only 58.50% and a gas fraction of 26.10%, which was associated with pore blockage, lower specific surface area (31.72 m² g?¹), and lower total acidity (1.39 mmol g?¹). Reusability tests of the Ni–Mo/MA catalyst revealed a decline in bio-jet fuel selectivity from 75.22% to 65.46% and bio-jet fuel yield from 61.68% to 44.84?ter four reuse cycles. This deactivation was correlated with a decrease in specific surface area from 57.12 to 25.53 m² g?¹ and a reduction in pore diameter from 10.10 to 3.75 nm due to coke deposition and partial sintering of the active metal species. These findings highlight the potential of Calophyllum inophyllum oil as a renewable feedstock for bio-jet fuel production and provide valuable scientific insights into the development of more sustainable and environmentally friendly aviation fuel technologies.
