Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are the dominant electrochemical energy storage technology for electric vehicles and stationary applications. However, their performance is highly sensitive to thermal conditions. Operating outside the optimal temperature range degrades cell capacity and can trigger thermal runaway. Therefore, a Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) is essential. Among various BTMS approaches, Flow Immersion Cooling (FIC) enhances heat transfer through direct contact with a flowing dielectric fluid. Nevertheless, the thermal performance of FIC systems with conventional inlet configurations remains suboptimal. To address this, tangential inlets are introduced to generate swirl flow, providing a strategy to enhance flow dynamics and overall thermal performance.
This study presents a numerical investigation of a Flow Immersion Cooling (FIC) system for a single Li-ion battery using HFE-7100 dielectric fluid. A swirl flow mechanism is employed to enhance the heat transfer coefficient by inducing tangential velocity components that disrupt the thermal boundary layer. The varied parameters include the nozzle injection angle relative to the vertical axis (30°, 60°, and 90°) at a constant flow rate of 0.5 LPM, as well as the number of nozzles (1, 2, and 3) evaluated across three different flow rates (0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 LPM). The simulations were conducted in ANSYS Fluent using the MSMD-NTGK electro-thermal model. The numerical results were validated against the experimental data, yielding a maximum error of 3.80%.
Simulation results demonstrate that increasing the inlet angle from 30° to 90° consistently enhances the Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC). The A90N1 configuration recorded the highest average HTC of 129.06 W/m²K, representing an improvement of approximately 20.6% over A30N1 (107.03 W/m²K). Performance Evaluation Criterion (PEC) analysis identified A90N1 as the optimal inlet angle configuration, with a PEC value of 1.024. In the nozzle number variation study at a 90° inlet angle, the A90N2 configuration consistently outperformed A90N1 and A90N3 across all tested flow rates, achieving the highest PEC value of 1.386 at 0.25 LPM. The 38% higher PEC value of A90N2 relative to the conventional axial FIC configuration at 0.25 LPM confirms that tangential inlet design with swirl effect is an effective strategy for significantly improving the thermohydraulic efficiency of the immersion cooling system without incurring excessive pressure drop penalties.
