The
redesign of JEC (Jogja Expo Center) as a Cultural and Convention Hub is based
on the urgency to increase Yogyakarta’s competitiveness in the global MICE
(Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions) industry, given that the
current condition of JEC still does not meet international MICE facility
standards. The primary objective of this design project is to formulate an
architectural concept for an international-scale convention center featuring
flexible, adaptive, and modular space planning, while seamlessly integrating
MICE functions with cultural and public activities. With Critical Regionalism
approach, the design seeks to harmonize modern requirements (technology,
comfort, and global standardization) with the local context of Yogyakarta
(culture, climate, material, and spatial patterns). Furthermore, the design
proposes comprehensive architectural solutions to address existing issues
related to circulation, building orientation, and the experiential quality of
the space, thereby strengthening the architectural identity of JEC to establish
it as a contemporary icon reflecting local wisdom.
