This study successfully impregnated CaO onto silica (SiO2)/magnetic material from iron sand (MM) for the transesterification reaction of trilaurin to produce methyl laurate. The sol-gel method was employed to modify SiO2 on MM using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as structural directing agents, then continued with the impregnation of CaO onto the MM?modified silica (MM?SiO2) with mass ratios of MM?SiO2 to CaO at 10%, 20%, and 30%. The resulting catalyst (10% MM?SiO2/CaO, 20% MM?SiO2/CaO, and 30% MM?SiO2/CaO) were characterized using FTIR, XRD, XRF, SAA, FE-SEM-EDX mapping, and catalytic activity testing, which included the optimization of catalyst mass, reaction temperature, and reaction time.
The results indicated that the MM?SiO2/CaO catalyst were successfully synthesized, with the 30% MM?SiO2 to CaO ratio yielding the highest conversion of 97.7% under optimal conditions (catalyst mass of 10 mg, reaction time of 1 hour, and temperature of 50 °C). the 30% MM?SiO2/CaO catalyst exhibited a surface area of 12.91 m2/g, a pore volume of 0.1189 cm3/g, an average pore diameter of 36.83 nm, and demonstrated a mesoporous structure.
Catalyst reusability testing was conducted over three reaction cycles to evaluate catalyst stability. The results showed that the 30% MM?SiO2/CaO catalyst possessed reasonably good catalytic stability, maintaining a methyl ester yield of 70.6% by the third reuse cycle. In conclusion, the synthesized catalyst exhibits strong catalytic performance in converting triglycerides into methyl laurate.
