The use of plastic polybags at PT Kutai Timber Indonesia has the potential to increase the amount of plastic waste generated and pollute the environment due to the non-biodegradable nature of plastic. Additionally, PT Kutai Timber Indonesia produces sengon wood residue from cutting and rotary operations that has not been optimally utilized. This wood waste has the potential to be processed into biocomposites for manufacturing biodegradable pots as an alternative to plastic polybags, with the addition of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and glycerol. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of the resulting biocomposites for manufacturing biodegradable pots, including density, water absorption, and biodegradability, as well as to determine the optimum combination based on the test results of these properties. The experimental design used was the Taguchi method with an L9(34) orthogonal array. The data analysis methods applied were Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) analysis, ANOVA, and Grey Relational Analysis.

The results showed that the biocomposite density values ranged from 0.6825 to 0.9320 grams/cm³, water absorption from 3.78% to 8.97%, and biodegradability from 13.88% to 21.78%. Taguchi analysis indicated that the mass of PVA was the most dominant factor influencing all three characteristics. Based on the Taguchi and Grey Relational Analysis methods, the best biocomposite combination for biodegradable pots was 15 grams of PVA, 3.5 grams of glycerol, 41.5 grams of wood residue, and a pressing temperature of 170°C. These results demonstrate that biocomposites made from wood residue, PVA, and glycerol have the potential to be used as an eco-friendly alternative material for biodegradable pots while reducing the use of plastic polybags.
