The shift in global economic structure toward a knowledge-based economy has positioned the creative industries as a strategic sector in national development. Amid the prolonged economic stagnation following the collapse of the bubble economy, Japan has drawn on popular culture, particularly anime, as an alternative sector to drive growth. Scholarly attention to how specific industrial actors build economic value chains from cultural products, however, remains limited. This study analyzes the formation of Japanese pop culture as a product within the cultural industries and the role of Studio Ghibli in advancing Japan's creative economy, arguing that pop culture does not generate economic value automatically but through the mechanisms of the cultural industries, which transform creativity and symbolic meaning into tradeable cultural products and intellectual property. The study employs a qualitative approach using a literature-based method drawing on secondary data from journals, academic books, Japanese government reports, and industry reports. The findings show that Japanese pop culture developed historically from a patronage system into an organized modern cultural industry through the stages of creation and circulation. Studio Ghibli functions as a glocal actor that transforms Japanese cultural identity into a source of global economic value through particularization of universalism at the creation stage and universalization of particularism at the circulation stage. This global reception is converted into economic value through intellectual property monetization, content-based tourism, and the strengthening of the Japanese animation industry's reputation as part of nation branding and soft power. The continuity of this role faces challenges of creative regeneration and the disruption posed by artificial intelligence. The study concludes that the contribution of cultural products to the creative economy is better understood as a multidimensional process of value creation than as a causal relationship measurable in linear terms.
