The modification of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as hydrogen storage media is crucial for supporting the clean energy transition. This study aims to computationally modify the MOF-650 structure by substituting the central metal cations with transition metals (Co/Ni) and functionalizing the azulene ligands with boronic acid, B(OH)2. The primary focus of this research is to examine the impact of electronic and structural changes on the affinity and adsorption capacity of hydrogen molecules (H2) within the MOF-650 framework.

The research procedure began with the structural modeling of MOF-650 exhibiting primitive cubic (pcu) topology. Geometric optimization and Density of States (DOS) analyses were performed using Density Functional Theory (DFT) with PBEsol functional and a double-Zeta valence basis set. Partial charge distributions at the Secondary Building Units (SBU) were analyzed using the DDEC6 method to evaluate cation electron deficiency. Subsequently, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to obtain adsorption isotherm, binding energies, and Radial Distribution Function (RDF) profiles across various temperature conditions.

The results show that Co2+/Ni2+ substitution generates stronger local electrostatic fields than Zn2+, while B(OH)2 doping on the organic linker enhances pore-wall polarization through dipole-induced interactions with H2. The synergy of both modifications is most pronounced in MOF-650-Ni-B(OH)2, which exhibits the highest H2 binding energy of -23.60 kJ mol-1 and an adsorption capacity of 92.52 mg g-1 at 77 K and 20 bar, a substantial increase over pristine MOF-650. These findings position modified MOF-650 as a superior hydrogen storage material at cryogenic temperature.
