Monitoring is one of the most significant aspects of construction project scheduling. An ineffective monitoring system may lead to delays in project execution and completion. Furthermore, current construction project monitoring practices are generally descriptive in nature and have limited capability to provide predictive analysis based on historical project data. Therefore, this study aims to develop a construction project monitoring system by integrating Microsoft Excel VBA and Machine Learning to support the early detection of project delay risks.

The case study was conducted using data from a five-story building construction project, consisting of weekly progress records, including work quantities, percentage of project progress, and cost information for 701 work items over a 49-week project duration. The proposed methodology includes time-series data processing, feature engineering, and the development of Machine Learning models using Random Forest Regression for progress prediction and Random Forest Classification for delay risk detection. The system was implemented as a mini-application based on Microsoft Excel with Python integrated as the computational engine for the Machine Learning models.

The results indicate that the regression model is capable of capturing the overall patterns and trends of construction progress, although it remains limited in representing the high fluctuations commonly encountered in actual construction activities. The regression model achieved good predictive performance, with a coefficient of determination (R²) ranging from 0.8 to 0.9. The classification model also demonstrated strong performance, achieving accuracy and ROC–AUC values ranging from 0.8 to 0.9, indicating reliable capability in identifying delay risks. Although both models produced satisfactory results, the developed system is more appropriate as an Early Warning System (EWS) for supporting project monitoring and decision-making rather than as a highly precise quantitative prediction tool, primarily because the models cannot fully capture the complex conditions encountered in the field. The proposed system is expected to support more proactive and data-driven decision-making in construction project control.
