This study aims to analyze how the possibility of being seen by humans affects the Borrowers’ movements, borrowing activities, space, time, and daily lives. It seeks to explain how these rules evolve into self-regulation that shapes the Borrowers’ hidden identity and vulnerable position within the human world. This study employs a literature review using a power relations perspective to examine how the possibility of being seen by humans affects the lives of the Borrowers, drawing on Michel Foucault’s books Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison and Power/Knowledge: Selected Interviews and Other Writings, 1972–1977. Invisibility system regulates how the Borrowers move, their borrowing practices, space, time, and daily lives. The system of invisibility then develops into self-regulation, whereby the Borrowers begin to regulate their bodies, voices, actions, and decisions. This regulation shapes their identity as hidden beings and places them in a vulnerable and marginalized position. This study highlights escaping detection in the novel, which initially functioned as a survival strategy but later developed into a system of invisibility that influences the Borrowers’ way of life and places them in a position of vulnerability within the human world.
