Earnings are a key performance indicator, but the use of the accrual basis provides room for discretion that is vulnerable to being exploited for earnings management, particularly in the industrial sector with its complex operational characteristics. This study aims to analyze the effect of leverage, company size, audit quality, and institutional ownership on earnings management. Using a quantitative approach, data were obtained from the financial statements of 20 industrial sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for the 2014–2024 period (220 observations) through a purposive sampling technique. Earnings management is proxied by absolute discretionary accruals (ABSDA) using the Modified Jones Model and analyzed using Random Effect Model (REM) panel data regression. The results indicate that the regression model overall has a good fit in explaining earnings management. Partially, only the leverage variable has a significant effect with a positive coefficient on ABSDA, indicating that an increase in the debt burden tends to increase the company's earnings management practices. Conversely, company size, audit quality, and institutional ownership are not proven to have a significant effect on earnings management. The Adjusted R-squared value of 0.030579 indicates that the independent variables are only able to explain 3.06% of the variation in earnings management in the industrial sector, while the remainder is influenced by other factors outside the model. This low determination value also suggests the limitations of the Modified Jones Model, which is less optimal for capturing the earnings management phenomenon in Indonesia, particularly within the industrial sector.
