The rapid expansion of biodiesel production has resulted in a significant surplus of glycerol, necessitating sustainable valorization pathways to improve its economic value. One promising approach is ketalization with acetone to produce solketal, a value-added fuel additive with favorable fuel properties. This study aimed to synthesize a taurine-grafted solid acid catalyst derived from tofu waste, evaluate its catalytic performance in glycerol ketalization, and investigate the effect of taurine loading on catalyst characteristics and solketal production.

Activated carbon was prepared from tofu-processing waste through phosphoric acid activation followed by carbonization under a nitrogen atmosphere. The carbon surface was subsequently oxidized using nitric acid and grafted with taurine at loadings of 5, 10, and 15 wt%. The synthesized catalysts were characterized using FTIR, SEM–EDX, and XRD. Catalytic activity was evaluated through the ketalization of glycerol with acetone under reflux conditions, while reaction products were analyzed using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS).

FTIR, SEM–EDX, and XRD analyses collectively confirmed the successful incorporation of taurine-derived functional groups onto the activated carbon surface. Increasing taurine loading resulted in greater surface functionalization and morphological modification while preserving the carbon framework. GC–MS analysis identified solketal as the principal product, with combined solketal area percentages following the order AC-15% (39.91%) > AC-10% (26.51%) > AC-5% (25.84%), demonstrating a positive correlation between taurine loading and solketal yield, though co-elution artifacts inherent to the non-polar stationary phase introduce uncertainty into absolute quantification. These findings confirm that taurine grafting effectively enhanced the catalytic performance of tofu waste-derived activated carbon, with AC-15% exhibiting the highest relative activity among the catalysts investigated
