A ship propeller is a crucial component in marine propulsion systems, functioning to convert rotational energy from the engine into mechanical thrust. As a component operating entirely underwater, the propeller continuously interacts with a highly corrosive marine environment due to high salinity levels. Hydrodynamic pressure and exposure to seawater electrolytes often trigger rapid material degradation, where statistics show that approximately 90% of damage to underwater components like propellers is caused by corrosion phenomena. Therefore, the selection of materials such as Stainless Steel 904L (SS 904L) is highly critical to maintaining the operational reliability of the ship. This research focuses on analyzing the utilization of a sacrificial protection system, commonly referred to as a sacrificial anode, using zinc as the primary material to protect SS 904L applied to propellers.
The research method was conducted experimentally by immersing specimens in a seawater environment with a salinity of 35 ppt for a total of 400 hours. Observations were performed at 100-hour intervals to measure two primary parameters: the corrosion rate using the weight loss method and changes in the mechanical properties of the material through Vickers hardness and impact strength tests. The primary objective is to evaluate the extent to which the sacrificial anode can inhibit the degradation rate of SS 904L in an extreme marine environment.
The results indicate that the zinc sacrificial anode is highly effective in increasing material resistance by reducing the corrosion rate from a range of 0.0426–0.0516 mmpy (unprotected) to 0.0191–0.0209 mmpy (protected), placing it within the "Excellent" category. This protection system also successfully maintained the stability of the specimen's hardness value to remain close to the initial reference (178.38 HV). Conversely, unprotected specimens experienced a fluctuating increase in hardness up to 191.16 HV due to the formation of a hard but brittle oxide passivation layer on the material surface. On the other hand, through impact strength testing, the material's toughness (impact strength) was observed to remain stable within the range of 3.83 J/mm² to 4.58 J/mm² compared to the initial value (3.98 J/mm²). Macroscopic analysis consistently showed ductile fracture characteristics, marked by a fibrous and dull cross-section, as well as intense plastic deformation. This stability is influenced by the Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) crystal structure typical of austenitic steel; thus, the combination of SS 904L and zinc anode is proven reliable for extending the service life of ship propellers.
