Foundations are structural elements that transfer building loads safely to the underlying soil. In bored pile foundation design, selecting an appropriate axial bearing capacity calculation method is a critical step because each method is developed based on different assumptions, input parameters, and application domains, resulting in varying bearing capacity estimates. The calculated bearing capacity is commonly evaluated using the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) test. However, the test results are influenced by assumptions inherent in dynamic analysis, making an additional complementary approach necessary. This study focuses on bored pile foundations in sandy soils. Therefore, the analysis and recommended methods are applicable only to these conditions. The objective of this study is to determine the most appropriate axial bearing capacity calculation method based on project characteristics and to evaluate its performance against PDA test results.
The study was conducted on four construction projects using five bearing capacity calculation methods: Meyerhof, Reese & O'Neill, Reese & Wright, Decourt, and Kulhawy. Method selection was performed using a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach with the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method based on six criteria: influence zone, soil layering, installation method effects, SPT data processing, effective stress, and soil shear strength. The calculated bearing capacities were subsequently evaluated against the PDA test results.
The results indicate that the recommended calculation method varies among projects depending on the dominant geotechnical characteristics. The synthesis of the two evaluation approaches shows that methods ranked highly by the multicriteria analysis generally also demonstrate good agreement with the PDA test results. Based on the findings, the Meyerhof method is recommended for bored pile foundations in sandy soils with relatively homogeneous soil conditions and limited SPT variability, whereas the Reese & O'Neill method is more suitable for sandy soils with more complex stratigraphy, greater SPT variability, and a stronger influence of effective stress.
