This study aims to produce chalcone derivatives through a synthetic process involving 3-chloroacetophenone combined with benzaldehyde derivatives, and to evaluate their ability to inhibit feeding activity as part of biological testing on armyworms. The study was conducted in three main stages. The first stage involved the synthesis of 5-bromovanillin and 5-bromoveratraldehyde through the bromination of vanillin and veratraldehyde using KBrO? and HBr in acetic acid medium. The second stage involved the synthesis of chalcone compounds via a Claisen–Schmidt condensation reaction between 5-bromovanillin and 5-bromoveratraldehyde with 3-chloroacetophenone using a 30% NaOH catalyst; the synthesis of the compounds was verified using FTIR, GC-MS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. The third stage involved testing the antifeedant activity of the resulting chalcone compound against the armyworm (Spodoptera exigua) at concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. The synthesis of 5-bromovanillin and
5-bromoveratraldehyde yielded orange and off-white solids with yields of 92% and 75%, respectively. The chalcone bromovanillin was a yellow solid with a yield of 90%, and the chalcone bromoveratraldehyde was a yellow solid with a yield of 86%, consistent with the target structures. Antifeedant activity tests of bromovanillin and bromoveratraldehyde against armyworms yielded antifeedant activity percentages of 92.41% and 97.67% at a concentration of 80%. The bromovanillin chalcone and bromoveratraldehyde chalcone show potential as new antifeedants.
