This study aims to identify the motivations underlying premium item purchases using Robux on the Roblox platform and to compare motivational patterns across three demographic groups, namely senior high school students, university students, and working adults. An exploratory-comparative qualitative design was employed through semi structured interviews with 21 purposively sampling selected informants, analyzed using the Gioia methodology. Two theoretical frameworks were operationalized as sensitizing concepts, namely Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2000) and the Perceived Value framework (Sweeney & Soutar, 2001). Trustworthiness was established through source triangulation and member checking. The findings indicate that motivations for premium item purchases are multidimensional. All four Perceived Value dimensions were identified across all groups, with emotional value as the most dominant. All three Self-determination theory psychological needs were present across groups yet manifested qualitatively differently according to each group's stage of psychosocial development. Motivational patterns differed systematically, with senior high school students driven primarily by social conformity pressures, university students displaying heterogeneous motivations reflective of the emerging adulthood phase, and working adults characterized by greater financial autonomy. Five organically emergent themes were also identified beyond the two primary frameworks, namely the extension of real-world identity into digital avatars, the avatar as a space for future identity exploration, concealed purchases outside parental oversight, romantic relationships as a primary consumption driver, and gaming as a restorative mechanism from occupational stress.
