Synthesis of an okara biochar composite and its acid-base activation were conducted for application as a photocatalyst in the degradation of Erythrosine B dye. This study aims to develop a TiO?-based photocatalyst modified with biochar for the degradation of Erythrosine B synthetic dye. Biochar was produced from soybean dregs (okara) waste via a pyrolysis process, followed by activation using HCl and KOH solutions. The TiO?–biochar composite was then synthesized through the sol–gel method via the reaction between titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTiP) and the acid-base activated okara biochar, ensuring that TiO? was uniformly immobilized on the biochar surface. The obtained material was subsequently characterized using several techniques, namely FTIR, SEM, and XRD.
The XRD characterization results indicated that the TiO?/ABAB composite was successfully synthesized while maintaining the stable anatase crystalline phase of TiO?. SEM images revealed the formation of a rough and porous biochar structure with the distribution of TiO? particles on its surface. The photocatalytic activity test demonstrated that the TiO?/ABAB composite works via a dual mechanism: adsorption by the biochar and photodegradation by the TiO?. The degradation efficiencies achieved under UV irradiation, visible light, and dark conditions were 99.96%, 86.97%, and 51.19%, respectively. In terms of parameter optimization, the optimum degradation conditions were obtained at pH 8 and a photocatalyst mass of 60 mg. The pHpzc value of the photocatalyst material was found to be 6.75, indicating that the electrostatic interaction of the surface charge plays a vital role in the photodegradation process. This acid-base activated okara TiO?–biochar composite exhibits highly promising potential as an efficient photocatalyst for dye wastewater treatment.
