Flexible pavements have a smooth surface and good durability, making them the most widely used type of pavement in highway construction. Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is often used as a flexible pavement material, but it has poor resistance to moisture damage. Fillers coat more than 80% of the aggregate surface and form an asphalt mastic that creates bonds within the mixture. Selecting the right type of filler can improve the mixture’s resistance to moisture damage.

This study analyzes the comparative effects of using stone dust, cement, lime, and hydrated lime as fillers on resistance to moisture damage through Retained Marshall Stability (RMS) and Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) tests under Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) conditions for AC-WC mixtures. Cement, lime, and hydrated lime were used to fully substitute stone dust (control filler) at a rate of 6.5% by weight of the total mixture.

Test results showed that the use of stone dust, cement, lime, and hydrated lime as fillers resulted in different OAC values for the mixtures, namely 5.22%, 5.54%, 6.50%, and 7.08%, respectively. The mixtures with these filler variations yielded RMS values of 94.96%, 79.66%, 92.48%, and 116.90%, respectively, as well as TSR values of 97.49%, 96.57%, 115.56%, and 85.55%. In this study, the RMS and TSR values of mixtures containing hydrated lime filler cannot be used as a reference for the mixtures’ resistance to moisture damage due to the high volume of air voids (VIM) in some test specimens. Based on these results, mixtures with lime filler exhibited the best resistance to moisture damage, as indicated by the highest representative TSR value, while cement filler did not meet the minimum RMS value required (80%).
