The spatial distribution of tourist visits is crucial information for supporting tourism development and management. One commonly used method for presenting spatial distribution is the choropleth map. However, choropleth maps show tourist visits spread across the entire administrative region. This issue is addressed by the dasymetric method, which excludes areas where the phenomenon cannot occur. Differences in these areas will result in varying spatial pattern analysis outcomes. This study aims to map tourist visitation data for the City of Yogyakarta using both the choropleth and dasymetric methods, as well as to analyze the spatial patterns using the Moran’s I and LISA indices, followed by a comparative analysis to determine the most appropriate presentation method.
This study uses data on the number of tourist visits to Yogyakarta City in 2024, destination coordinates, and spatial data on administrative boundaries in Yogyakarta City. The choropleth map was created based on aggregation at the kelurahan level, while the dasymetric map used grid aggregation. Spatial autocorrelation analysis was then conducted using the Moran’s Index and LISA, which were subsequently used to compare the choropleth and dasymetric maps descriptively and quantitatively using mapcurves. Additionally, a comparison was made from the perspective of map users through usability testing.
The results of the study indicate that the distribution of tourist visits in Yogyakarta City can be presented using both choropleth and dasymetric maps. The global spatial pattern formed by the choropleth map is consistently random, whereas the dasymetric map produces an inconsistent pattern that cannot even be validly identified. The local spatial patterns of the choropleth map form a single hotspot, whereas the dasymetric map is dominated by coldspots and undefined areas. Based on the comparison results, the choropleth map is more consistent in spatial autocorrelation analysis and is preferred by users in terms of satisfaction, visual appeal, ease of understanding, and alignment with the data. Meanwhile, the dasymetric map was preferred in terms of map effectiveness and detail. Thus, the choice of map presentation must be tailored to the map’s intended use and user needs.
