Potato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans is one of the most destructive diseases in potato cultivation and can lead to severe yield losses under favorable environmental conditions. The disease develops rapidly under high humidity and moderate temperatures, making it a major constraint in potato production, particularly in highland areas. This study aimed to validate the pathogen causing late blight in potato plants and to evaluate the effectiveness of several fungicides in suppressing disease development in the field. Pathogen validation was conducted through morphological observation and molecular identification using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) with specific primers O-1F/O-2R. Field evaluation of fungicide treatments was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Disease incidence, disease severity, and the Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) were recorded as the main observation parameters.
The results showed that infected potato plants exhibited typical late blight symptoms, including water-soaked lesions that developed into pale green to dark brown necrotic spots on leaves and stems, along with white sporulation on the abaxial leaf surface. Morphological characteristics and PCR amplification producing a DNA band of approximately 245 bp confirmed the presence of P. infestans. Fungicide treatments did not significantly reduce disease incidence and severity.
