Sludge limpasan tambang batu bara umumnya memiliki konsentrasi padatan tersuspensi (TSS)

melalui pembentukan flok hidroksida logam. Namun, keberhasilan proses elektrokoagulasi

kerapatan arus rendah (0-40 A/m2), sedang (40-120 A/m2), dan tinggi (>120 A/m2). Percobaan

dilakukan menggunakan reaktor batch dengan elektroda aluminium. Parameter yang dianalisis

meliputi kekeruhan, kecepatan filtrasi, pH, dan konsumsi energi spesifik. Kondisi operasi

proporsional. Hal ini menunjukkan adanya trade-off antara peningkatan efektivitas pengolahan

dan efisiensi penggunaan energi.

Berdasarkan analisis Simple Additive Weighting (SAW), kondisi operasi optimum diperoleh

aplikasi.

Coal mine runoff sludge generally contains a high concentration of total suspended solids

(TSS), resulting in high turbidity and reduced filtration performance due to the formation of a

cake layer that causes filter media clogging. Electrocoagulation is an effective treatment method

for removing suspended solids through the in situ generation of metal hydroxide flocs.

However, its performance is highly dependent on operating conditions, particularly treatment

time and applied voltage, which determine the current density. Furthermore, studies integrating

contaminant removal efficiency, filtration performance, and energy consumption as the basis

for determining optimum operating conditions remain limited. In this study, filtration

performance was represented by the filtration rate, as it reflects the ease with which water passes

through the filter media and is strongly influenced by the characteristics of the flocs produced

during the electrocoagulation process.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of treatment time and applied voltage on turbidity,

filtration rate, and specific energy consumption (SEC), as well as to determine the optimum

operating conditions for the electrocoagulation process. Treatment times of 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20

min were selected to represent the stages of floc formation from the initial phase to near-steady

state conditions. Applied voltages of 10, 20, and 30 V were used to represent low (0–40 A/m²),

medium (40–120 A/m²), and high (>120 A/m²) current density, respectively. Experiments were

conducted in a batch electrocoagulation reactor equipped with aluminum electrodes. The

evaluated parameters included turbidity, filtration rate, pH, and specific energy consumption.

The optimum operating condition was determined using the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW)

method.

The results showed that increasing treatment time and applied voltage generally reduced

turbidity and enhanced the filtration rate through the formation of larger flocs. The

improvement in filtration rate was most consistent at 20 and 30 V, whereas at 10 V with a

treatment time of 20 min, the filtration rate decreased because fine flocs caused filter media

clogging. Meanwhile, specific energy consumption increased with treatment time and applied

voltage, from approximately 0,11 kWh/m³ at 10 V for 1 min to 32,87 kWh/m³ at 30 V for 20

min, while the corresponding reduction in turbidity did not increase proportionally. These

findings indicate a trade-off between treatment effectiveness and energy efficiency.

Based on the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) analysis, the optimum operating condition

was achieved at 20 V with a treatment time of 10 min, yielding the highest preference score of

77.18. This operating condition provided the best balance among turbidity reduction, filtration

rate enhancement, and specific energy consumption. The findings demonstrate that effective

electrocoagulation performance should not be evaluated solely based on the highest

contaminant removal efficiency but rather on the overall balance among multiple performance

indicators, thereby providing a more representative basis for the design and operation of full

scale electrocoagulation systems.
