Coal mining is one of the key industrial sectors contributing to Indonesia's energy supply and economic growth. However, the projected increase in coal production through 2033 is expected to generate larger volumes of mining waste, thereby increasing the potential risk of environmental pollution. One of the resulting wastes is run-off sludge, a sediment accumulated in settling ponds from rainfall runoff in open-pit mining areas, which contains high concentrations of suspended solids. This study aimed to investigate the effect of electrode configuration through variations in current density on the electrocoagulation performance for turbidity removal, filtration rate improvement, and energy consumption during the treatment of coal mine run-off sludge.
The experiments were conducted using run-off sludge with a total suspended solids (TSS) concentration of 10.000 mg/L. Four electrode configurations were evaluated, namely two-plate, monopolar parallel (MP-P), monopolar series (MP-S), and bipolar series (BP-S), under low, medium, and high current density conditions using Fe-Al electrodes with a treatment time of 10 min. After electrocoagulation, turbidity and filtration rate were measured and compared with the initial conditions. The experimental data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine the significance of the treatment effects.
The results demonstrated that each electrode configuration generated different current density characteristics, thereby affecting the electrocoagulation performance. The MP-P configuration operated at medium current density achieved the lowest turbidity of 9,18 NTU, while the highest filtration rate of 0,33 mL/s was obtained using the MP-P configuration at high current density. Meanwhile, the lowest energy consumption of 0,16 kWh/m³ was achieved by the BP-S configuration operated at 10 V. Energy consumption increased with increasing current density, ranging from 0,28 kWh/m³ at low current density to 15,63 kWh/m³ at high current density. Regression analysis indicated that current density influenced turbidity removal, filtration rate, and energy consumption, with coefficients of determination (R²) of 0,3537, 0,6304, and 0,9463, respectively.
