This paper examines the PlayON Jogja Community’s claims and justifications for public street space in the city of Yogyakarta through regular running activities. This paper employs a descriptive qualitative approach through a case study, combining three analytical frameworks: the theory of space production, the concept of the right to the city, and the concept of shared space. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the community coordinator and participatory observation of the community’s routine activities in the public street spaces of Yogyakarta City.
This paper finds that the PlayON Jogja Community claims space through three mechanisms. First, the community creates alternative spaces through organized and repetitive practices, so that the street is not merely a space for vehicular mobility but is also interpreted as a social space for running. Second, this claim occurs through negotiations in the form of situational decisions among users, thereby forming an informal consensus and creating asymmetrical coexistence. Third, social recognition from other users manifests as a symbol of tolerance through interaction, thereby serving as an informal justification for the community’s claim to the public space of the street. This study found that the right to the city is not only manifested through confrontational movements but also through consistent presence. Furthermore, it found that the space of contradiction between dominant and alternative spaces does not always result in a differential space but exists within an asymmetrical coexistence that depends on the situation and the tolerance of users in the public space of the street.
