In sandy soils where the bearing layer is located at considerable depth, pile foundations generally behave as floating piles, with their axial load capacity relying primarily on skin friction. However, in bored pile foundations, the presence of an annulus between the pile and the soil can degrade the quality of pile-soil interaction, thereby reducing the effectiveness of skin friction mobilization. One method to improve the quality of this interaction is the application of friction paste as an annulus-filling material. This study aims to evaluate the mobilization of skin friction based on the t-z relationship in pile foundations with the application of friction paste in sandy soil and to identify the combination of variables that produces the most stable mobilization response. The study was conducted experimentally using a floating pile model with variations in the L/D ratio of 3, 5, 7, and 9, friction paste volumes of G1/3, G2/3, and G3/3, and curing times of 7 and 28 days. Tests were performed using tensile tests to obtain the relationship between resistance (t) and movement (z), which was then analyzed based on the characteristics of the t-z curve, the maximum friction resistance value, movement at peak conditions, and the stability of the post-peak response.
The results of the study indicate that the application of friction paste changed the t-z curve response from plastic response to strain-softening and produced more consistent skin friction mobilization at a curing age of 28 days than at 7 days. Increasing the L/D ratio improved the development of skin friction mobilization, particularly for the G2/3 and G3/3 friction paste volumes. The L/D9–G3/3 variation at a curing age of 28 days produced the highest maximum skin friction resistance of 0.087664 kg/cm², indicating that this combination provided the best skin friction mobilization response in this study.
