Soybean (Glycine max L.) is an important food crop in Indonesia; however, its productivity is often limited by weed interference. One of the most dominant and difficult weeds to control in soybean cultivation is purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.), creating a need for more environmentally friendly weed management strategies. One potential alternative is the utilization of citronella hydrosol (Cymbopogon nardus L.) as a bioherbicide due to its allelochemical compounds that may inhibit weed growth. This study aimed to identify secondary metabolites with bioherbicidal potential in citronella hydrosol, determine the effective concentration for suppressing purple nutsedge growth without adversely affecting soybean plants, and identify the most effective application timing for weed control. The study was conducted from November 2025 to February 2026 at the Agrotropica Learning Center Laboratory, Production Management Laboratory, and Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The research consisted of compound analysis using GC-MS, a germination uji hayati (bioassay), and a pot experiment. The results showed that citronella hydrosol contained 18 secondary metabolites, with nerol (37.63%), neomenthoglycol (30.86%), and citronellol (5.89%) as the dominant compounds, which were presumed to contribute to its bioherbicidal activity. The effective concentration of citronella hydrosol was approximately 5%, which inhibited the germination and growth of purple nutsedge without causing adverse effects on soybean growth. Application at planting time (H0) was the most effective timing for suppressing purple nutsedge growth. Therefore, citronella hydrosol has the potential to be developed as an effective bioherbicide against purple nutsedge and is relatively safe for soybean cultivation.
