This study designs and fabricates a modular syringe pump-based extruder housing prototype using the Stereolithography (SLA) method. This innovation aims to address abrasive wear and high maintenance downtime inherent in conventional auger screw LDM extruders.
The components were manufactured using Anycubic Plant-Based Resin 2.0 with an optimal post-curing time of 16 minutes. At this saturation point, the material exhibited a maximum shrinkage of 0.57 % in diameter and 0.15 % in height, ensuring a precise, snug fit for a standard 50 ml medical syringe.
Structural validation via FEA simulation under a 165 N plunger thrust load proved the housing is safe from failure, exhibiting a maximum 1st Principal Stress of 13,98 MPa, deformation of 0,27 mm and a minimum Safety Factor (SF) of 2,86. Similarly, the rod component is deemed safe as it has a first principal stress of 11.4 MPa, a maximum deformation of 3.6 mm and a minimum safety factor of 1.01 (above the safety limit of SF > 1).
Extrusion performance analysis confirmed a highly beneficial linear relationship between motor speed and flow rate, defined by the equation Q = 44.03 × N mm³/s. In conclusion, this system successfully delivers a stable, accurate, and hygienic low-cost paste extruder alternative by utilizing disposable components.
