The Ressurection of the Old Southern Values and Black Response :: A Case Study on Jim Crow Laws

Penulisan ini bertujuan untuk menunjukan kebangkitan nilai-nilai lama dalam masyarakat selatan dan response masyarakat kulit hitam. secara spesifik merujuk pada kajian terhadap Jim Crow laws. Tujuan dari kajian ini untuk mengetahui perkembangannya di masyarakat selatan yang baru(New South) serta pengaruhnya kepada respon masyarakat kulit hitam khususnya di era Jim Crow Law. Untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang menyeluruh pada masalah tersebut, penulis menggunakan pendekatn interdisipliner dari pengkajian Amerika. Pendekatan –pendekatan itu terdiri dari sosisologi yang mengobservasi dan mengetahui perkembangan masyrakat kulit hitam sebelum dan sesudah perang saudara. Di Amerika. Selain itu juga, pendekatan ekonomi digunakan untuk menggali masalah kapitalisme dan signifikansinya terhadap perkemebangan masyarakat kulit hitam. Dari sudut pendekatan psikologis digunakan untuk mengetahui respon orang kulit hitam dalam menentukan posisi mereka didalam masyarkat Amerika. Kajian ini dimulai dengan memeperkenalkan kedatangan dari orang kulit hitam di tanah yang mengandung madu(Amerika), cikal bakal(embrio) dari Jim Crow Law, Kebangkitan dan implemantasi dari Jim Crow Law serta martin Luther King Jr dan Malcolm X sebagai representasi dari respons dari masyarakat kulit hitam. Hasil dari riset ini mengungkapkan kebangkiatn nilai-nilai lama dalam masyarakat selatan setelah perang saudara memiliki arti yang sangat penting yakni mengakibatkan diskriminasi dan prejudis terhadap orang –orang kulit hitam dalm berbagai aspek kehidupan terutama dalam era Jim Crow Law. Hal ini juga mengakibatkan respon masyarakat kulit hitam yang di mulai dari gerejaa yang menghasilkan Kaum intelektual hitam diakhir abad ke 19. Terlebih lagi, pergerakan masyarakat kulit hitam ini menghasilkan arti sebenarnya dari kebebasan yang di motori oleh dua kelompok besar di pertengahan abad ke 20. Kelompok pertama adalah mereka yng mengatasnamakan golongan integrasi di bawah kepemimpinan Martin Luther King Jr yang memiliki tujuaan untuk berintegrasi dengan orang –orang kulit putih. Sedangkan kelompok kedua adalah golongan nasioanalis dibawah kepemimpinan Malcolm X yang bertujuan untuk tidak berintegrasi dengan orang –orang kulit putih. King dan malcolm memiliki perbedaaan pendapat dalam memperjauangkan hakhak orang kulit hitam . namun mereka memiliki persamaan tujuan yakni untuk kebebasan dan persamaan hak di masyarakat kulit hitam.

This thesis reveals The Resurrection Of old Southern values and Blacks responses. Specifically this study reflects on case study of Jim Crow Laws. The objectives of the study were to explore and discuss the development the relation of the Old southern values and its implementation in the New South. Yet, it also analyzes the impact of the Old Values towards the Blacks responses especially in the Jim Crow laws era. In order to have the total comprehension on the issues, the writer uses the interdisciplinary approach of American Studies. It involves sociology to know and observe the development of the Black community before and after the civil war in America. It also utilizes an economic approach to dig up the problem from a capitalistic point of view and its significance to the development of Black community. From the psychological point of view are also used to know the response that the blacks used to determine their position in the community. This study starts with an introduction of the arrival of Blacks in the Land of honey, the embryo of the Jim Crow laws, the Resurrection and implementation of the Jim Crow Laws and Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X as the representative of the Black response. The result of this research reveals that Resurrection of the Old Southern values has a significant meaning after Civil war that it had made the racial prejudice and discrimination towards the Blacks in all aspects of life especially in the imposing of the Jim Crow Laws era. Yet, this caused Blacks response starting from the church which created many intellectual blacks in the late 19th century. Hence, the Black movements reached its goal which supported by the two biggest groups in the mid of 20th century. The first group was under the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. This group was purposed to integrate with the whites. The second group was the Nationalist under the leadership of Malcolm X. The purpose of this group was to disintegrate towards the whites King and Malcolm X had different point of view in Black rights struggles. Yet, they have the same purpose for the Blacks freedom and equal rights
