Slow-release fertilizer (SRF) is one strategy for improving fertilization efficiency and reducing nutrient loss to the environment. This study examines the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) addition on the release rate of phosphorus (P) and the characteristics of chitosan-based multilayer membranes. The addition of PEG is expected to modify the membrane structure, particularly porosity, hydrophilicity, and swelling capacity, thereby influencing the nutrient release mechanism.

Multilayer membranes were fabricated using a sandwich method with chitosan, citric acid, calcium phosphate, and PEG. PEG was incorporated into the chitosan matrix via a cross-linking process, then cast into layered membranes. Membrane characterization was performed using ATR-IR, SEM-EDX, and XRF to identify functional groups, surface morphology, and elemental composition. The physicochemical and mechanical properties of the membranes were evaluated through tests of swelling degree, biodegradation, tensile strength, and hydrophilicity based on water contact angle measurements. The performance of the membranes as SRFs was evaluated through a phosphorus release test in an aqueous medium over 30 days. Phosphorus release data were analyzed using the Higuchi and Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic models.

The results of the study show that the addition of PEG increases the porosity and degree of swelling of the membrane, but reduces its mechanical strength. PEG-modified membranes also exhibit more hydrophilic properties, causing them to degrade more rapidly. Nutrient release tests showed that PEG-modified sandwich membranes had a higher average percentage of P release accumulation, namely 2.96%, compared to membranes without PEG modification at 1.47% over 30 days. This increase indicates that PEG plays a role in accelerating the diffusion of phosphorus from the membrane matrix. The PG membrane better meets the SRF criteria because its total release reached approximately 88.8% over 30 days, whereas the XPG membrane exhibited excessively slow release and did not meet the minimum release criteria based on European Standardization Committee (CEN)
