A propeller is a component of a ship that functions to convert mechanical energy into thrust in water. Long-term operation of propellers in seawater increases the risk of corrosion; therefore, materials with high corrosion resistance are required. Nickel-Aluminum Bronze (NAB) is one of the primary materials used for marine propellers due to its excellent mechanical strength, corrosion resistance in seawater, and good manufacturability. Although NAB inherently possesses high corrosion resistance, its properties can be further improved through heat treatment processes. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Annealing Treatment and Deep Cryogenic Treatment (DCT) in improving the hardness and corrosion resistance of NAB material.
The research was conducted by dividing the material into several treatment groups, namely untreated NAB, Annealing Treatment, Deep Cryogenic Treatment (DCT), and a combination of Annealing Treatment and DCT. The DCT process was carried out for 16 hours and 36 hours, while Annealing Treatment was performed for 2 hours and 4 hours. The combined treatment consisted of annealing for 2 hours and 4 hours followed by DCT for 16 hours. The annealing process was conducted at a temperature of 675°C, followed by cooling to room temperature. The specimens were then pre-cooled in a freezer for approximately one hour before undergoing DCT using liquid nitrogen. Corrosion testing was performed in a ±3.5% NaCl solution using the weight loss method.
The results of the study provide a comparison of the hardness and corrosion resistance of NAB under different treatment conditions. DCT contributes to improvements in hardness and corrosion resistance, while Annealing Treatment reduces the amount of the corrosion-sensitive beta (?) phase and promotes the formation of the kappa (?) phase, which supports the development of a protective oxide layer. The combination of Annealing Treatment and DCT produces the most favorable mechanical properties among the investigated treatment conditions.
