Advances in nanotechnology have opened up new opportunities in materials engineering, particularly in the development of nano-scale coating systems with high protective performance. These innovations are crucial in addressing corrosion—a destructive threat that continues to cause significant damage across various industrial sectors due to metal degradation. At the same time, the world is also facing the urgent need to manage photovoltaic (PV) solar panel waste, the volume of which is rapidly increasing. Therefore, this study aims to synthesize and characterize TiO?/SiO?/PV nanocomposites using the sol-gel method as additives in anti-corrosion coatings for metal protection.

The TiO?/SiO?/PV nanocomposite was synthesized using the sol-gel method by mixing the precursors titanium isopropoxide (TTIP), tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and PV waste powder in a controlled manner until a homogeneous sol was obtained. This synthesis process involved hydrolysis and condensation reactions to form a metal oxide network, followed by drying for 17 hours and calcination for 3 hours. The resulting material was then characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to observe its morphology, particle size, and crystal structure. In addition, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was used to determine the composition and elemental distribution within the nanocomposite. Coating performance was evaluated through adhesion strength tests and corrosion rate tests using the Tafel method in three corrosive media: 3.5% NaCl, 2% HCl, and 2.5% KOH.

The characterization results indicate that the TiO?/SiO?/PV nanocomposite was successfully formed with particle sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nm. The resulting crystal structure exhibits the TiO? anatase phase, characterized by a lattice spacing of 0.35 nm on the (101) crystal plane. SEM-EDS results for the TSP5 formulation also showed that elements from PV waste were successfully integrated into the composite matrix, with a composition of 36 wt% O, 23 wt% Ti, 19 wt% Si, 16 wt% Nb, and 7 wt% C. The use of this nanocomposite as a coating additive can improve adhesion to the 4A–4B category and significantly reduce the corrosion rate. The protection efficiency achieved was 99.88% in 3.5% NaCl, 99.78% in 2% HCl, and 99.34% in 2.5% KOH. These results indicate that the TiO?/SiO?/PV coating demonstrates excellent ability to protect metal surfaces, both through physical barrier mechanisms and chemical stability against the penetration of corrosive ions.
