Background: Increased screen time and low levels of physical activity among adolescents can affect body composition, including muscle mass. Sedentary behavior resulting from excessive screen use and a lack of physical activity during the growth period is thought to be associated with a decrease in muscle mass among adolescents, including Arm Muscle Area (AMA).
Objective: To determine the relationship between screen time duration and physical activity on arm muscle area among adolescents aged 12–15 years.
Methods: This research is a non-experimental study with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted in Kulon Progo Regency with 185 sampels (100 boys; 85 girls) aged 12–15 years. Sample was selected using consecutive sampling. Data for screen time duration collected using Questionnaire for Screen Time of Adolescents (QueST) and physical activity collected using Physical Activity Questionnaire for older Children (PAQ-C), while AMA was measured using upper arm circumference and triceps skinfold thickness, which were then calculated using a formula. Spearman correlation test with p<0>
Result: Most adolescents, both boys and girls, have high levels of screen time (85.9%). Boys engage in more physical activity (45%) than girls (10.6%). There is no relationship between screen time duration and gender (p=0.896). There is relationship between physical activity (p<0>p<0>p=0.827), girls (p=0.322), and boys (p=0.468). There is a positive correlation and relationship among all respondents (r=0.171; p=0.020). However, no relationship was found among boys (p=0.916) and girls (p=0.232).
Conclusion: There is no relationship between screen time duration and AMA, either overall or by gender. Physical activity and AMA showed a relationship among all responden. However, no relationship was found when analyzed based on gender.
