Horses (Equus caballus) are frequently utilized in various equestrian sports, ranging from Olympic dressage competitions to traditional racing, which is deeply rooted in cultural heritage. However, research regarding leukocyte profiles in these animals remains limited. This study aims to evaluate and compare the leukocyte responses and differential counts in dressage horses and racehorses following 30 minutes of physical activity. A total of 30 horses were used in this study, consisting of 10 dressage horses, 10 racehorses, and 10 pastured horses as the control group. The research employed a pre-test and post-test design, with blood samples collected via the jugular vein before and after exercise. The dressage horses underwent progressive intensity training (walk, trot, canter), while the racehorses performed a walk and trot routine supplemented with one lap of gallop. The results demonstrated that physical activity in dressage horses triggered a significant increase in total leukocyte count (WBC), absolute neutrophils, and absolute lymphocytes; this is a hormonal response that mobilizes blood cell reserves into the bloodstream as a form of exercise adaptation. Conversely, the exercise intensity given to the racehorses only affected the relative percentage of differential leukocytes (neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte) without causing significant changes in absolute values. The increase in WBC within the control group (pastured horses) was identified as an adaptive response to psychological factors (excitement) and spontaneous activity. This study demonstrates that exercise intensity and type significantly influence white blood cell profiles, where in progressive training in dressage induces a more massive mobilization of immune cells compared to lower-intensity training in racehorses within the same duration.
