The synthesis of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based bioplastics as a model for nitrogen slow-release fertilizer using liquid SROP (Slow Release Organic Parametic) fertilizer as a nutrient source has been conducted. This study aimed to obtain CMC-based bioplastics as a nitrogen-providing slow-release fertilizer, investigate the effect of adding liquid SROP fertilizer produced by CV. Humus as a nutrient source on the physical, and mechanical properties of the bioplastic composites, and determine the nitrogen release kinetics of the bioplastic.
The bioplastic was prepared from CMC incorporated with liquid SROP fertilizer as the nutrient source. The bioplastic was synthesized using the solvent casting method with water as the solvent at room temperature. The composition of the bioplastic consisted of CMC as the matrix and malic acid as the cross-linking agent, maintained at a constant concentration. The volume of the liquid SROP fertilizer used as the nutrient source was varied at 1,25; 2,5; 3,75; 5; and 7,5 mL. The CMC/MA/SROP bioplastics were characterized using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and evaluated for tensile strength and elongation using a Universal Testing Machine, as well as water stability, swelling, and biodegradation tests.
The results showed that the addition of liquid SROP fertilizer into the bioplastic composition increased the elongation of the bioplastic but decreased its tensile strength. The nitrogen release kinetics of the bioplastic followed a pseudosecond-order kinetic model, with a nitrogen release rate constant range of 0,004269 g.mg-1.hour-1. Based on its overall properties, the bioplastic with the lowest liquid SROP fertilizer compositions (1,25 mL and 2,5 mL) exhibited the most ideal slow-release characteristics to prevent burst release and maintain a linear nutrient availability.
