Diseases caused by disorders of the cardiovascular system are among the leading causes of death, with cases continuing to rise each year. One such condition is the narrowing of the lumen in the coronary arterial vessels, which is commonly treated through stent implantation. An artificial vascular model is employed as a training tool to support the proficiency of cardiologists in performing stent placement procedures. The artificial vascular model must satisfy elastic criteria and possess dimensions that can be fabricated in accordance with clinical requirements.
In this study, artificial vascular models in the form of hollow cylinders with varying diameters and wall thicknesses were fabricated using an additive manufacturing process based on 3D printing technology, namely Vat Photopolymerization (VP) of the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) type, utilizing a flexible resin with a hardness of 50 Shore A. The print quality was evaluated based on geometric dimensional error and visual defects of the model.
The findings of this study present a comprehensive account of the manufacturing process, encompassing the pre-processing, printing, and post-processing stages along with the parameter configurations of each process. The fabricated models exhibited a geometric dimensional error of 3.06% and an average visual defect score of 0.7 on a maximum scale of 3. This manufacturing process yielded artificial vascular models that are both elastic and transparent, featuring drain holes that are automatically generated during the printing process.
