This research aims to design and develop an automated instrumentation and control system based on the ESP32 microcontroller to monitor and control environmental parameters of plants, including air temperature, air humidity, soil temperature, and soil moisture. This system was developed to meet the need for an integrated, low-cost control instrument capable of real-time field data logging. The developed system integrates DHT22, DS18B20, and a combination of capacitive and resistive soil moisture sensors as input units, implementing a Closed-Loop Control System mechanism to maintain the soil water content within a specified setpoint range (40–60%). The methodology applied encompasses hardware and software design, device fabrication, and sensor calibration procedures using the Piecewise Linear Interpolation and Comparative Calibration Offset methods to ensure measurement accuracy. Data analysis is focused on three aspects: validating the sensor calibration procedures, performing a comparative analysis of the capacitive and resistive sensors' responses to changing soil conditions to evaluate the consistency and limitations of each sensor as a control element, and evaluating the effectiveness of the control system in maintaining soil water content within the designated 40–60% setpoint range. The expected outcome is a physically tested prototype of an automated irrigation control system along with the comparative characterization of both soil moisture sensor types as a foundation for sensor selection in precision irrigation systems.
