The manga Solanin by
Inio Asano represents the social realities faced by Japanese youth after the
economic crisis of the 1990s, particularly regarding labor precarity and
uncertainty about the future. This study aims to examine how themes and
narrative elements construct the structure of Solanin, to understand the
social realities related to precarity and freeters in the Japanese labor
system, to analyze the representation of precarity within the manga, and to
explore the social criticism conveyed through the work. This research employs a
descriptive qualitative method with a sociology of literature approach. The
primary data source of this study is the manga Solanin, while the
secondary data were obtained from books, journals, scholarly articles, and
previous studies related to precarity, freeters, and early 21st
century Japanese social conditions.
The results of this study show
that Solanin represents several forms of precarity experienced by
Japanese youth, namely employment insecurity, income insecurity, job
insecurity, and skill reproduction insecurity. These representations are
reflected through unstable employment status, uncertain income, pressure within
the workplace, and limited opportunities for self-development experienced by
the characters. In addition, Solanin also contains social criticism
toward the Japanese work system, which no longer guarantees life stability, the
pressure of modern social standards of success, and the loss of meaning in life
caused by a lifestyle centered excessively on work and productivity.
