Carbon emissions from the construction sector have become one of the major contributors to the global climate crisis. This sector accounts for approximately 32% of global energy consumption and is responsible for around 34% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO?) emissions. In Indonesia, the construction sector contributes approximately 24.6% of total national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, primarily due to the extensive use of construction materials and energy consumption throughout the construction process. This study aimed to identify and classify carbon emission sources, quantify the total carbon footprint, analyze the contribution of each emission source, and evaluate the potential for emission reduction during the structural and architectural construction phases of a university building project in Yogyakarta using the ENCORD Construction CO?e Measurement Protocol.

The results indicate that the total carbon emissions generated during the construction stage amounted to 2,839.15 tCO?e, consisting of 84.54 tCO?e (2.98%) from Scope 1, 115.18 tCO?e (4.05%) from Scope 2, and 2,639.43 tCO?e (92.97%) from Scope 3. The identified emission sources included fuel consumption from heavy equipment and project vehicles, electricity use, construction materials, material transportation, supply chain activities, operational vehicles, business travel, accommodation, and construction waste management. The contribution analysis revealed that construction materials were the dominant source of emissions, accounting for 2,535.55 tCO?e (89.31%) of the total project carbon footprint. Ready-mix concrete and reinforcing steel were identified as the primary emission hotspots due to their high embodied carbon and substantial quantities required for structural and architectural works.

To assess mitigation opportunities, several carbon reduction scenarios were evaluated, including the use of HVO50 low-carbon fuel for Scope 1 activities, geothermal-based electricity generation for Scope 2, and low-carbon concrete together with recycled reinforcing steel for Scope 3. The analysis demonstrated that implementing these mitigation strategies could reduce the total project carbon footprint to 1,510.97 tCO?e, representing a 46.78% reduction compared with the baseline scenario. The findings highlight that the adoption of low-carbon construction materials offers the greatest potential for emission reduction and can serve as a key strategy for promoting low-carbon construction practices and supporting sustainable building development in Indonesia.
