Freshwater fish in the peatland of Jenamas is inseparable from the people of Jenamas itself since their early settlement. Proyek Lahan Gambut Satu Juta Hektar has converted the peatland forest into paddy rice field in order to fulfil the Indonesia’s new order regime’s rice self-sufficiency program. The paddy rice field’s drainage had been built, cutting through many tributary streams including the peat domes. As a result, the peat swamp nearly died, and this leads to the decreasing of fresh water fish population drastically. Sumur became one of the people’s means of scraping a living in the midst of the swamp damaged by land conversion. This study examines reasons behind the existence of sumur. Why does sumur still get chosen even though there are a lot of more efficient and instant ways to fish in the peatland of Jenamas? This study is based on arguments derived from ethnographic data through the participant observation method conducted from April to June 2025. Through Eric Wolf’s lens on political ecology, sumur is defined as a medium for political struggles and a whole battlegrounds of powers. The research question is addressed through an analysis of findings showing that the existence of sumur persists in the Jenamas community since their function has been redefined as a strategy for local resistance and resilience. Jenamas’ river fishermen realized that sumur allows fishes to reproduce as these structures provide them with a habitat to inhabit. Furthermore, sumur ensure that the peat forest are less susceptible to fires during the dry season. Beyond that, this study seeks to uncover the often-overlooked gender dimension. This perspective reveals that the manifestation of resistance not only limited to the adaptations towards ecological damage. There is continuous, ongoing struggle against the patriarchal system within the social environment of Jenamas.
