This research aims to analyze the waste management crisis in Yogyakarta through the lens of environmental ethics, specifically the Weak Anthropocentrism framework proposed by Bryan G. Norton. Furthermore, the study seeks to formulate a more applicable paradigmatic foundation for environmental sustainability to break the cycle of systemic crisis that has long persisted in Yogyakarta.
The focus of this research lies on the ethical and paradigmatic failures in waste management following the closure of the Piyungan Landfill, where technocratic policies are deemed insufficient in fundamentally addressing the roots of public consciousness and pragmatic behavior. This study is a qualitative library research utilizing the research model for actual problems. Data analysis was conducted through the methods of description to dissect the reality of the crisis, interpretation to capture the philosophical meaning behind the data, and synthesis to formulate a new ethical foundation.
The results demonstrate that the waste problem in Yogyakarta is rooted in the dominance of the Strong Anthropocentrism paradigm, which prioritizes immediate comfort (felt preferences) over long-term ecological carrying capacity. The research findings conclude that Norton’s Weak Anthropocentrism serves as a solution through the transformation of preferences toward rational considerations (considered preferences) and the mandatory implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for the private sector. Additionally, this study proves that the integration of Norton’s rationality and the Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana philosophy as a public ethic provides a practical foundation for resolving the waste management issues in Yogyakarta.
