The innovation of CRISPR-Cas-9 has opened the possibility of conducting human germline genome editing (HGGE) beyond therapeutic purposes, the prospect of human enhancement. It sparked debate among scholars and scientists, leading to calls for a global moratorium and explicit policy to prohibit the clinical use of HGGE. However, recent discussions have revisited the possibility of applying HGGE, backed by proposals for policy revision that involve public deliberation and prolonged debate over the subject. Critics of HGGE highlight potential moral and social risks as things to be sacrificed, as well as safety risks due to the irreversible consequences for future generations. On the contrary, proponents of HGGE highlight the potential benefits to justify the technology although the existing literature remains limited. This research aims to explore the potential role of HGGE in addressing human biological needs, the justification for allocating resources to study and develop the technology, and its possible implication for future human evolution.
This research is a qualitative study applying normative evaluation and conceptual analysis methods. Data were collected through a literature study and analyzed using transhumanism proposed by Max More. The methodological elements include interpretation, a holistic approach and historical continuity, conceptual idealization, and a comprehensive description of the research findings.
The analysis suggests two main findings: 1) As an intelligent technology, the amendment of the human biological condition through HGGE constitutes a necessary intervention and represents the proper use of resources because of its possibility to serve as a long-term investment for human capacity enhancement in order to reach the next point of intelligent evolution. This conclusion is based on the assumptions that human nature is neither fixed nor perfect, possesses no intrinsic value, and is inherently constrained by biological limitations. HGGE enables humans to transcend these limitations and intentionally direct evolution toward a stage of intelligent life free from biological constraints. And thus, strict restrictions on HGGE would eliminate its potential benefits and undermine the effective use of resources allocated for its development. 2) The widespread application of HGGE may shift the dominant evolutionary mechanism from natural selection to artificial selection, potentially accelerating the process of biological evolution, gradually transforming the human species into posthuman, and eventually contributing to cultural evolution. While natural selection operates randomly and results in individuals with varying biological limitations, HGGE works as a form of artificial selection, intentionally alters these outcomes. Humans become agents capable of shaping both the direction and pace of their own evolution. Consequently, widespread adoption of HGGE may reshape social values and norms, thereby contributing to cultural evolution.
