The aim of this study was to design a monocoque chassis made of Carbon fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) as a replacement for the steel tubular space frame chassis in Formula Student Tim Yacaranda cars to reduce mass and increase structural rigidity. The chassis material uses a composite sandwich structure that includes Carbon fiber Toray T700, Carbon Unidirectional, as well as Core PVC80. Design evaluation was performed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) through static rigidity torsional test with extreme loading of 2175 Nm and dynamic modal simulation. The results of theoretical calculations showed that the mass of the chassis reached 29,81 kg, lighter than the average lower limit of the tubular chassis. In torsional rigidity simulations, the structure was found to have a torsional stiffness value of 2782,35 Nm/deg, and theoretically, the analysis results showed that the designed chassis design was safe with a maximum Inverse Reserve Factor (IRF) value of 0.87449 and a minimum safety factor of 1.143. Modal simulations identified eight natural frequencies from the chassis, where the lowest frequency was at 101,43 Hz with deformation value is 7,8361 mm and the greatest deformation of 45,095 mm occurred at a frequency of 268,06 Hz. In conclusion, this monocoque chassis design is computationally capable of reducing the mass of the vehicle without sacrificing resistance to torsional and dynamic loads.
