Atmospheric water harvesting through condensation is an innovative solution to address the global freshwater crisis. The efficiency of this system depends heavily on maintaining the dropwise condensation mode and the speed of condensate removal to minimize thermal resistance. This research aims to analyze the effect of mechanical vibration on the condensation characteristics and heat transfer performance of biphilic copper plates with horizontal groove patterns.

Experiments were conducted using a water harvesting system that integrates a thermoelectric module as an active cooler to maintain the plate surface temperature at 2 ± 1 °C inside a chamber with a constant relative humidity of 80 %. Mechanical vibrations were induced using a vibration speaker with variations in sweep frequency (1000 – 80 Hz) and structural frequency (240 Hz), along with three types of waveforms: sinusoidal, triangle, and square. Observations were carried out to evaluate droplet shedding dynamics, water harvesting mass flux, and the heat transfer coefficient.

The results showed that the application of mechanical vibration significantly enhances condensation performance. The condensation water harvesting mass flux increased from 0.132 kg/m²h in the non-vibration condition to a maximum of 0.34 kg/m²h under structural vibration with a square waveform. The mass flux increase of up to 278% corresponds to an improvement in the convective heat transfer coefficient, indicating a better convective heat flux. This enhancement occurs because vibrations accelerate the droplet shedding process, allowing fresh condensation areas to form more rapidly. The integration of hybrid patterns with mechanical vibration holds great potential for optimizing atmospheric water harvesting systems and high-performance heat transfer devices.
