The availability of clean water has become an increasingly significant global challenge due to population growth and climate change. One potential method to address this issue is harvesting water from the atmosphere through the condensation of water vapor. This study aims to examine the effect of applying mechanical vibrations on improving the performance of condensate water harvesting on a condenser plate with a hydrophilic–hydrophobic patterned surface. This combination of surface properties is expected to accelerate droplet formation and removal, thereby enhancing the water harvesting rate and heat transfer.

The research method was conducted experimentally by applying variations of mechanical vibrations to a vertically oriented hydrophilic–hydrophobic patterned condenser plate using several waveform types. The experiments were carried out under stable saturation temperature, surface temperature, and humidity conditions. This study observed several parameters, including the characteristics of condensation formation and removal on the surface, heat transfer in water harvesting, vibration power generated by the speaker, and the efficiency of heat transfer enhancement.

The results of the study reveal that the application of mechanical vibrations significantly improves the performance of condensate water harvesting. The heat flux of water harvesting increased from 94.97 W/m² under no-vibration conditions to a maximum value of 257.77 W/m² under mono vibration at 240 Hz with a square waveform, representing an increase of approximately 171%. This enhancement occurs because vibrations accelerate droplet coalescence and condensate removal from the surface, thereby promoting faster renewal of the condensation area. In addition, the hydrophilic–hydrophobic surface combination helps direct droplet flow toward hydrophilic pathways, facilitating condensate removal. Droplets formed on hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces exhibit differences in both formation regimes and size, where droplets on hydrophilic surfaces tend to be larger than those on hydrophobic surfaces. These findings indicate that the application of mechanical vibrations on a condenser plate is an effective method to enhance condensation rate, water harvesting performance, and heat transfer in atmospheric condensation systems.
