The Role of Persuasive Language in Dove Self-Esteem Project to Convey Body Positivity Related Messages Based on Lamb's (2019)

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis bahasa persuasif yang terdapat dalam salah satu video Dove Self-Esteem Project yaitu "Dove Toxic Influence: Mothers and Daughters Confront Toxic Social Media" serta menganalisis peran jenis bahasa persuasif tersebut dalam menyampaikan pesan kampanye yang berkaitan dengan Body Positivity. Dalam analisisnya, penelitian ini menggunakan sudut pandang Lamb (2019) tentang 25 kategori Bahasa Persuasif dan menggunakan pendekatan Semiotika Roland Barthes (1957) untuk membantu menganalisis lebih dalam peran bahasa persuasif dalam menyampaikan pesan terkait body positivity. Terdapat sebelas kategori bahasa persuasif yang digunakan dalam video. Kategori Appeal to Family Values memiliki kontribusi paling banyak (21.43%) . Sedangkan kategori lainnya seperti Anecdote, Appeal to Compassion, Appeal to Tradition, dan Imagery berkontribusi paling sedikit (3.57%). ada 5 pesan terkait body-positivity yang teridentifikasi dalam video, diantaranya Bahaya menormalisasi saran kecantikan yang beracun, dampak saran kecantikan yang beracun, kebutuhan akan komunikasi dan perlindungan remaja dari saran kecantikan yang beracun, orang tua sebagai panutan bagi anak-anak, dan harapan untuk menciptakan konsep kecantikan yang lebih sehat. Kategori-kategori bahasa persuasif tersebut berperan menyampaikan pesan-pesan terkait body positivity dengan memikat emosi, memberi solusi logis, dan meningkatkan rasa solidaritas audiens terhadap isu kecantikan yang memperkuat kesimpulan bahwa bahasa persuasif memiliki kontribusi untuk membentuk pemahaman audiens tentang isu-isu yang kecantikan dan kepercayaan diri.
This study examines the Dove Self-Esteem Project campaign video titled “Dove Toxic Influence: Mothers and Daughters Confront Toxic Social Media,” focusing on an analysis of the categories of persuasive language identified in the video. This study aims to identify the types of language used in the video based on Lamb’s (2019) theory of persuasive language, as well as to analyze how the identified categories of persuasive language convey messages related to body positivity. Eleven categories of persuasive language were identified, with Appeal to Family Values contributing the most (21.43%), while Anecdote, Appeal to Compassion, Appeal to Tradition, and Imagery contributed the least (3.57%). There are five messages related to body positivity, such as the dangers of normalizing toxic beauty advice, the impact of toxic beauty advice, the need for communication and protection of adolescent from toxic beauty advice, parents as role models for children, and the hope of creating a healthier concept of beauty. The persuasive language in the video under study convey body positivity related messages through emotional appeal, logic, and collective solidarity. This reinforces the conclusion that persuasive language significantly contributes to shaping the audience’s understanding of issues related to beauty and self-confidence.
